Joelle Schmitz to study Canadian trade liberalization as Canada-U.S. Fulbright Scholar

August 22, 2003 – Joelle Schmitz has been selected to receive a prestigious Canada-U.S. Fulbright award. As a Canada-U.S. Fulbright Scholar, Schmitz will be hosted through McGill University.

While in residence at McGill, Schmitz will conduct research on Canadian trade, with a view to exploring ways in which regulatory barriers to domestic and international trade may be reduced and future opportunities optimized.  Schmitz intends to develop a case study in the Canadian context in order to further develop a theoretical model into a strategic tool of trade liberalization.  Schmitz will explore trade as a means to facilitate intercultural understanding and conflict avoidance.

“I am optimistic that Ms. Schmitz’ research on trade liberalization will contribute in important ways to the literature on international trade,” said Dr. Michael K. Hawes, Executive Director of the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program. “I am pleased to welcome Ms. Schmitz to the distinguished group of Canada-U.S. Fulbright scholars.”

Schmitz completed her Bachelor of Arts in political science at Drew University and her Master of Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.  Among the many distinctions received over the course of her studies, Schmitz was awarded a top tier Harvard merit academic scholarship, a fellowship from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Italy and Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha honors.
